5 Rules to Improve Your Sleep Comfort

Sleep comfort is one of the most essential elements that determine the overall quality of an individual?s sleep. When people sleep in discomfort, they are often physical and emotionally tired and as a result, unable to face the pressures of the day.

The bedroom is a personal refuge for many people where they can escape to relax from the strains of life. As a result, sleep comfort should be the utmost priority of every single person.

Below are 5 rules that should be followed in order to improve your sleep comfort.

 Rule #1: Reduce Lighting
Many people are under the assumption that they can sleep peacefully even if the lights are on in their bedroom. This is actually not true. Research shows that the amount of lighting in a room can interfere with a person?s sleep patterns.
Why? Essentially, the human brain has what is commonly known as an internal clock. This clock is set in accordance to the rhythms (natural of course) of day and night (light and dark).

When it is dark, the human body releases a hormone known as Melatonin which is basically the chemical that triggers the human body to sleep. When there is light outside, the body suppresses the release of melatonin therefore getting you ready for the day.
With that being said, in order to keep the body?s internal clock functioning properly, sleep in a dark room, if possible.

Rule #2: Reduce Noise
Unfortunately, many of us are not able to sleep because there is often some noise that keeps us awake. Sound disrupts our sleep because it keeps our brains alert and hyper-active. This increased activity causes the brain to keep all of its higher functions running when it should be relaxing.

If you are able to cut out all the noise that is keeping you awake (by turning off the TV, radio and etc), then by all means do it. However, if you live in a noisy area, then in order to allow the brain and body to rest properly, ear plugs should be used. Ear plugs are usually very comfortable and do not cause any irritation when you toss and turn in bed.

Rule #3: Adjust Temperature
Research shows that the temperature of the human body affects the individual?s ability to sleep; however, scientists also state that there is no set temperature that all people must sleep in.
Every person is different and likes sleeping in different temperatures. Some people like to sleep in a cold environment while others like their rooms nice and warm while they sleep.
Adjust the bedroom temperature to what you feel is comfortable for you while you sleep. This way, you will be able to sleep comfortably throughout the night.

Rule #4: Choose Comfortable Bedding

New research shows that the quality and type of bedding an individual sleeps on can also affect their sleep comfort. Simply choose the type and quality of bedding material that you are comfortable with.

Rule #5: Sleep at one time
Unfortunately, due to the different activities that all of us undertake throughout the day, we are not able to sleep on time every day. Most of us lack consistency when it comes to our sleeping pattern. Sometimes we retire to bed very early while at other times, we go to sleep very late.

At this point, it is important to understand that the body works according to a strict pattern. If you disrupt that pattern, then you will end up waking up in the middle of the night and have trouble falling asleep. To avoid all these problems, sleep at a specific time every day.
Sleep comfort is of the utmost importance and should be cared for by everyone. By following a few simple rules, you can ensure that your sleep comfort is maximized therefore allowing you to face the day ahead with ease.
