Bad Breath-Cause and Remedies



Bad breath, or as it is medically known, halitosis, is a common problem, affecting almost all of us at one time or another. Millions of people throughout the world suffer from bad breath. Bad breath is responsible for the embarrassment and destroys relationships with family and friends. It may flatten your confidence and self-esteem and may even cause severe depression.

Tooth decay

Plaque on the tongue can cause bad breath where bacteria can grow.

If you do not clean your mouth after consuming alcoholic drinks, tobacco chewing, cigarette smoking, and foods like onions, garlic, etc., it can contribute to bad breadth.

Dentures

Heavy metal accumulation

Some disease like diabetes, gingivitis, esophageal cancer, lung abscess, liver disease , etc.)

Excessive use of alcohol based mouthwash like Listerine. If you use such a mouth wash before sleeping, then your mouth will remain dry for the whole night, which can cause bad breath.

Throat infection

Smoking

A deficiency of vitamin B and/or zinc may be the cause of your bad breath.

Drugs (Paraldehyde, inhaled anesthetics, insulin injection, etc.)



Remedies
1). Drink tea. Preliminary research suggests that compounds in both green and black tea called polyphenols may stop the growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath.
2). Drinking water and other fluids will help keep your mouth moist. Water, soup and watery fruits and vegetables, such as cucumber, are thought to help to rebalance the body.
3). Brush your teeth in the morning, in the evening, and after every meal, specially after consuming milk products, fish and meat.
4). Brush your tongue along with your teeth regularly.

5). Wash the tongue with baking soda dissolved in warm water to reduce the acidity in your mouth making a less-friendly environment for the bacteria to grow.
6). Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol. Alcohol can dry out the mouth, which contributes to bad breath.
7). Another effective remedy for bad breath is avocado, far superior to any mouth lotion or remedies for this condition. It effectively removes intestinal putrefaction or decomposition which is one of the most important causes of bad breath
8). A study (Feb 2005) reported to the International Association for Dental research suggests that eating plain yogurt for 6 weeks can sweeten your breath because it reduces levels of offensive compounds produced by bacteria in the mouth by 80%.
9). Rinse your mouth before sleeping with a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon added.
10). Use herbs to freshen your breath. Chew on a small sprig of fresh rosemary, parsley, spearmint, or tarragon for up to a minute.
11). Chew peppermint or carnation for better breath smell.
12). Grind the fresh beans with few cardamom seeds and make into a reviving cup to be drunk without milk first thing in the morning (but avoid if you also have a hangover). This will help in curing bad breath.
13). Use a tongue scraper, which helps to remove dead cells, food particles and bacteria from the tongue. A tongue scaper is a special plastic instrument found in drug stores and some health food stores that costs several dollars. In Ayurveda, a thick coating on the tongue is called "ama" and is thought to be caused by improper or incomplete digestion.
14). Rinse your mouth before sleeping with a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon added.
