Middle Ear Infection: one of the problem mostly children facing is middle ear infection
.
A middle ear infection is a common type of ear infection. A middle ear infection is also called otitis media.
A middle ear infection is the result of an invasion of bacteria into the section of the ear called the middle ear. The ear includes three areas: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. Sound waves travel through the outer ear, into the middle ear where they cause vibration of the tympanic membrane. These vibrations are then transmitted through the inner ear. In the inner ear, sound vibrations are converted into electrical impulses and carried by the 8th cranial nerve to the brain.
A middle ear infection can interfere with this process and result in ear pain, hearing impairment and other symptoms. Symptoms of a middle ear infection may vary between individuals in character and intensity. Complications of a middle ear infection can be serious in some cases and result in permanent hearing loss and other problems. For more details on symptoms and complications, refer to symptoms of middle ear infection.Otitis media, or infection of the middle ear, is quite common in children. Until about age six, some children develop such infections with every cold or sniffle. Infections caused by bacteria entering the middle ear from the nose and the throat via the eustachian tube. Untreated infections can result in permanent hearing loss. Recurrent middle ear infections are often linked with glue ear.
Symptoms The most prominent symptoms are severe earache and loss of appetite. Your child may also have a fever or a discharge from the ear, and there may be some hearing loss. A baby with a middle ear infection may be distressed and pull and rub her ear. She may also have general symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Causes: The real cause of middle-ear infection is, however, the outcome of previous medical treatment of childhood fevers or due to operations for the removal of tonsils or adenoids. The disease denotes that toxins, which nature has tried to throw off through the usual channels of elimination, have been diverted back into the system and have been lodged in the inner-ear structure. This causes the continual suppuration and discharge associated with the disease.
Treatment for this. At home, keep your children comfortable and cool and give lots of drinks as well as her medicines. The child should avoid getting water in the ear until the infection has cleared. To begin with, the patient should be on an orange juice diluted with water for three to five days. A warm-water enema should be administered daily during this period to cleanse the bowels. After the short juice fast, the patient should adopt an exclusive diet of fresh fruits for further three to five days. Thereafter, he may gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on whole grain cereals, raw or lightly cooked vegetables and fresh fruits.
Further short juice fast followed by an exclusive fruit diet should be undertaken at two or three monthly intervals, until the discharge has completely cleared up. Children can, however, start the treatment with an all-fruit diet, instead of juice fast, for four or five days, with two or three consecutive days at monthly intervals. The patient should avoid white flour, sugar and all products made from them, pickles, condiments and flesh foods. He should eliminate the foods, which raise the amount of phlegm like milled rice, sugar and lentils.
